CURRENCY
The peso is the official currency. Major Credit Cards and US dollars are
accepted in all establishments. US and Canadian dollars, and euros are easily
exchanged. Bank hours: from 9:00am to 4:00pm
LANGUAGES
The official language is Spanish. The majority of the indigenous population
speak Mayan. English, French, Italian and German are also spoken within the
tourism industries.
TIPPING
One or Two Dollars per suitcase and 10% to 15% of the value of consumption in
restaurants and bars. Tips may already be included.
DRINKING WATER
Major Hotels and Restaurants have water purification plants. Nevertheless,
drinking bottled water is recommended.
CLIMATE
The average temperature is 79 F. During the summer (April to October) the
maximum temperature is 97 F and during the winter (November to March) the
minimum temperature is 64 F. Playa del Carmen has 253 days of sunshine per year.
AIRPLANES and HELICOPTERS
Small airplane may be rented in order to visit remote areas and certain agencies
provide flights to the archeological zone of Chichen Itza (state of Yucatan) or
Tikal (Guatemala).
Certain agencies invite you to enjoy magnificent aerial views of the Caribbean
an to take unique photographs. There are international Airports in Cancun and in
Cozumel and an Airport in Chetumal. Playa del Carmen, Tulum (Riviera Maya)
Majahual and Kohunlich (southern part of the state) all have runways.
GROUND TRANSPORTATION
In downtown Playa del Carmen, taxis are recommended. To rent a car a credit card
and a current driver’s license are necessary. Gas stations provide two types of
unleaded gasoline: Magna and Premium, and only accept cash. Federal highway are
safe and in good condition, with a maximum speed limit of 68 mi/h. The Angeles
Verdes (Green Angels) that patrol them provide mechanical assistance.
Comfortable, punctual and safe intercity bus lines depart from the bus terminals
and provide service to the region’s main cities, in addition to the rest of the
country.
CLOTHING
Lightweight and casual. A sweater may be necessary during winter. Certain
exclusive restaurants in Playa require semi-formal clothing. When visiting the
ruins or exploring the Jungle, comfortable shoes, a hat or a cap, sunglasses,
mosquito repellent and sun block are recommended.
ELECTRICITY
110 Volts. In general, Hotels have voltage converters for appliances requiring
220 volt. Certain outlets don’t accept polarized or 3-pronged plugs; therefore
carrying an adaptor is advisable.
TIME ZONE
Six hours less that Greenwich Mean Time. Summer hours begin the first Sunday in
April and end the last Sunday in October.
